Since the founding of Newport Coast Oral Facial Institute (NCOFI), multiple research projects have been conducted through the NCOFI research division.
The Director and Mentor of Research has been James C. Earthman, PhD, Professor of Material Science and Bioengineering at the UCI School of Engineering. Papers have been published by our Research Team in peer reviewed journals and textbooks. Projects have included research for new materials for crowns and implant systems, the effectiveness of oral health educational materials for children and bioengineering techniques in dentistry.
The largest area of research has been focused on developing a system to evaluate the overall and localized structural stability of dental implants and natural teeth. The work has produced numerous patents and a medical device for clinical use. Of tremendous pride for all, is the large number of biology and engineering students who have gained research experience, mentoring and graduate degrees based on our projects. To date, our student researchers have earned two PhD’s and numerous acceptance notices to medical and dental schools.
